Ericsson CEO sees Open RAN impact from 2023

The CEO of Ericsson, one of the companies set to be negatively impacted by the growing trend towards disaggregated mobile infrastructure models, says he expects Open RAN market developments to “impact revenues” from 2023 onwards. Speaking during the Swedish vendor’s third quarter earnings call on Wednesday, Börje Ekholm noted, in response to a question from an investment analyst, that “we see a lot of discussions about Open RAN and the pros and cons. What is important to remember is that we have said we're a key contributor to O-RAN [the O-RAN Alliance, the specifications body it joined in February 2019] and we will continue to be so. We believe this is something that clearly is going to happen, so we’re going to make sure we're well positioned. That's also why we need to transition more towards software revenues as well,” stated the CEO. He added: “I don't really see Open RAN to have a major impact in 2021-22 jobs with a computer science degree , but after that I thin

Is the AF’s Digital University the future of IT training?

As the Air Force’s Digital University (DU) program gets closer to launching – either in late December or early January 2021 – it’s adding vendor partners to help train service members in core technology areas such as artificial intelligence and machine learning, cybersecurity and software development. Anyone in the service with an af.mil email account -- government civilians, active-duty military or military reservists -- and any level of tech-savvy can access DU’s 7,000-plus classes. Since the end of June, almost 5,000 people – from novices to experts -- have completed about 10,000 hours of training. Currently in beta testing, DU partnered with three private-sector digital training providers to create customized learning paths to help service members develop new tech skills. what can you do with a computer science degree handles initial to intermediate levels, Pluralsight takes the middle range and Udacity covers the top group. That means service members working in Air Force technol

Sweden bans Huawei, ZTE from upcoming 5G networks

Swedish regulators on Tuesday banned the use of telecom equipment from China's Huawei and ZTE in its 5G network ahead of the spectrum auction scheduled for next month. The Swedish Post and Telecom Authority (PTS) said the setting of the licence conditions followed assessments by the Swedish Armed Forces and security service. European governments have been reviewing the role of Chinese companies in building their networks following pressure from the United States, which says they pose a security threat because, among other concerns, Chinese companies and citizens must by law aid the state in intelligence gathering. Sweden's security service called China "one of the biggest threats against Sweden". The United Kingdom in July ordered  information technology vs computer science   equipment to be purged completely from Britain's 5G network by 2027, becoming one of the first European countries to do so. Huawei and ZTE did not immediately respond to requests for commen

Making working from home really work

Thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, the work-from-home (WFH) trend has simply exploded this year and shows little sign of slowing down in the months and years ahead. In fact, with no end in sight for the novel coronavirus, it's estimated that the portion of the US workforce working from home is still hovering around the 30% level eight months into the pandemic, up from just 6% of employees before last March. Although that figure is down from estimates of more than 50% during the height of the pandemic-induced mass lockdowns in the spring, it's still five times higher than before. Moreover, dozens of major US and international companies have already announced that their employees can work remotely long-term. That ever-growing list includes Google, Facebook, Uber, Twitter, REI, Siemens, Novartis, Otis, VMware and Slack. A study presented by Kantar Research at Light Reading's Cable Next-Gen Business Services digital symposium earlier this month bears out that point as well. The

Demand for computer maintenance increases

As soon as studies resumed in schools and universities, many students and teachers rushed to buy laptops for participating in the distance education process. Some took their old devices to repair shops in order to fix them so that they can catch up with the educational process, reports Al-Qabas daily. Owners of a number of computer maintenance workshops have spared no effort in attracting customers. Their advertisements have increased on the websites that offer services, and on social networking sites. They also seek to double their capacity in preparation for this “profitable” season. In Hawally area, specifically on  computer science vs information technology  Street, many computer maintenance workshops are competing to attract students and teachers who are looking for solutions to the technical problems they face, or want to install the necessary programs. Dozens of technicians and specialized engineers are being recruited currently. Computer maintenance engineers and technicians a

Why are educational establishments so vulnerable to cyber-attack?

Last month the DoppelPaymer crime gang attacked Newcastle University with ransomware. With many IT services not operating, the university reported that "it will take several weeks" to address the issues”. In the UK, 35 out of 103 universities responding to a poll by ToppLine Comms admitted to being attacked by ransomware over the past five years. Of these, 34 said they did not pay ransoms (Liverpool John Moores was non-committal). Of the rest, 25 said they hadn’t been attacked and 43 refused to answer. But elsewhere ransoms are being paid. Over the summer the University of California San Francisco (UCSF), working on a cure for Covid-19, paid a US$ 1.14 million (£910,000) ransom to the  how much does a computer engineer make   hacking gang. Netwalker is reportedly linked to at least two other ransomware attacks on universities in the past few months. Following a spike in attacks during August, the UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) issued a warning for schools, colleges

5 ways developing exceptional active listening skills will help you achieve goals

Do you passively or actively listen to others? Here's what project managers need to know about the difference and the value of developing exceptional active listening. Active listening means focusing on what a speaker is saying to fully understand and retain their message before answering or sharing your thoughts. As a valuable interpersonal communication skill, it ensures you're able to engage in a relevant way and remember specific details without asking for repeated information. As a project manager, you play a vital role in understanding what's going on around you, and this requires having active listening skills. With exceptional active listening skills, project managers could gain these five benefits. Active listening allows you to improve your input. By staying focused on what the speaker is saying, you can answer their questions or provide meaningful input clearly. Many people still spend time thinking about what they would like to say and fail to let others finish

Be on the Edge to maximize 5G

In the business world, we expect one plus one to be greater than two for the simple reason that the whole will be greater than the sum of the parts. In the case of 5G and Edge computing, the outcome is exponential rather than being additive. These two technologies promise to deliver plenty, and hence a combination of the two is expected to yield tremendous results. As per Gartner, the 5G network infrastructure market would be at $8.1 billion in 2020 and IDC forecasts that the 5G connections worldwide will grow with a CAGR of 217% from now till 2023.  In the same period, it is also expected that 60% of the infrastructure deployed will be in edge. These statistics are clear forward indications of the complimenting effect of 5G and Edge computing. The article examines, through 3 different angles, how this complementing effect will be playing out in the future. Edge as an enabler for 5G 5G, or the 5th generation wireless technology, can provide ten times higher speed and one-tenth of late

How a network segmentation strategy works with SD-WAN

Software-defined WAN has ushered in a new focus on network segmentation and security. All major SD-WAN vendors include some form of network segmentation in their products, touting the technique as a way to address security and path isolation. A proper network segmentation strategy requires that companies forge a solid understanding of both their systems and goals. SD-WAN vendors have their own definitions of network segmentation, and no single supplier has a cohesive segmentation strategy that will holistically address your organization's segmentation needs. Myriad segmentation considerations are likely to arise -- from authentication and authorization to managing security roles and policies -- and research is critical. Network teams have traditionally segmented networks by using a variety of tools to create path isolation in different processes. Various tag routing schemes or virtualized routing instances were common, as were security access control lists (ACLs). Almost all metho
